Glycerin (glycerine, glycerol), is a hygroscopic substance- a "humectant," which means it has the ability to absorb water from the air. Glycerin is produced naturally when we make soap, through the saponification of fats (i.e. during the process of soap making).

The presence of glycerin in our handmade natural soaps is highly beneficial, as it adds moisturizing qualities to the finished bar soap. Glycerin can also be extracted and collected from natural soaps through a chemical reaction and sold to other industries or used to make pure glycerin soap (glycerine soap).

As wonderful as glycerin is, without the addition of other oils, pure Glycerin Soap lacks many of the attributes of a good bar soap, most importantly, good cleaning ability, and lathering qualities. Pure glycerin soap is also prone to sweating and melting and must be kept out of the spray of the shower and dried off after use to prevent it from disappearing quickly.

Our handmade bar soaps contain all of their naturally created glycerin, along with the bar-improving benefits of palm oil for hardness, coconut oil for bubbes and a touch of castor oil for sumptuous lather and extra conditioning! By leaving all of the lovely, naturally created glycerin right in our handmade natural soap, our bars are naturally humectant, too!
